All AEDs have the same operational steps
* turen on the power
* Attach the leads of the devise to the patient.
* Initate the analysis of rhythm.
* Deliver the counter shock, if indicated or safe.
AEDs come in two basic types: fully automatic and semiautomatic devices. Fully automated devices, when activated, analyze the rhythm and deliver the appropriate counter shock. Semiautomatic devices analyze the electrocardiograph data and then advise countershock. the operator then must activate the countershock control. On most AEDs, analysis and countershock take 10 to 15 seconds, After countershock is delivered, the analysis control is activated to assess the results. A series of countershocks may take 45 to 60 seconds. Although APR cannot be given during this time, the positive effects of countershocks overshadow the negative impact of not giving CPR.
Monitor leads are attached to the defibrillator and then placed on the patient at the upper right sternal border and the lower rib area. Once attached all patient movement and CPR should be stopped before the analysis is initiated. The operator should ensure that all personnel are clear of he patient before the countershock is delivered. If there is no response to a series of three countershocks, begin CPR for 1 minute and then repeat the series of three shocks and CPR untill reurn of spontaneous circulation. No pulse checks are requied between the individual shocks in a set of three.
